“Go Out and Count Birds, Instead of Hunting it”; Voice of Christmas

Today, we explore a new idea put forth about 120 years ago. It is very exciting and fascinating. Do You know what we are going to open out? Here it is…

What Happened?

About 120 years ago, before 1900, The tradition of people on Christmas days, to kill hundred of wild animals and birds, which came into first sight. It killed hundred of birds when for the first time Dr Frank M. Chapman, founder of Bird-Lore, proposed a new way of celebrating this day. It was to save birds. This saving was with a unique idea; Counting the birds. This idea was first presented on Christmas day of 1900.

The way of killing birds transforms into a counting of birds. This is now the largest of census of birds which is conducted voluntarily, without any reward. This, now can save thousands of birds each year. His idea “Go Out and Count Birds, Instead of Hunting it” is now voice of nature.

Only last year, about 48 Million birds were counted which represents about 2600 species at all. It is more than one quarter of the species of birds world wide.

This is a great tradition which should continue for the welfare of bird population and for human itself. It can help conservationists, government and NGOs in a number of ways. For example, It can help to observe about the trends in population of a specific species of bird in an area. It may urge governments to take suitable measures for the conservation of bird species. It is a mind refreshing course. With the passage of time, it will bring more innovation into the ideas, values and the methods of counting toward the common people.
